Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble

We always have a blast. There’s something cathartic about playing music with a group of people you love.” Hannah O’Flynn ‘15

The Barbary Coast is the student jazz ensemble of Dartmouth College. Composed almost entirely of non-music majors, the ensemble specializes in creative music. Through unique one-week residencies in the fall and winter terms, students in the Barbary Coast enjoy outstanding opportunities to learn from and perform with some of the finest jazz, funk and Latin artists in the world. Spring term brings the “Senior Feature” concert, celebrating the talents of the graduating students in the Coast, performing selections of their own choosing.

The wide-ranging repertoire of the ensemble extends from original compositions and arrangements to works by Ellington, Charles Mingus, Thad Jones and contemporary jazz composers; from the Latin jazz of Arturo O'Farrill to the “Afro-Colombian funk” of Gregorio Uribe; from the "Jazz Mafia" of San Francisco-based Adam Theis to the inspired music of Christine Jenson; from the “Mardi Gras Indian” music and modern jazz of Donald Harrison to Joe Bowie’s “Big Band Funk”; from time-honored New Orleans brass band “second line” syncopations to the out-of-this-world compositions of Sun Ra. As a result, many of the ensemble’s distinguished guest artists have proclaimed the Barbary Coast to be "the most eclectic college jazz ensemble in the country."
